Darija IS a language and it is the language spoken by the Moroccans... How can you deny your mother tongue? A dialect is considered so if it's really intelligible by the speakers of the mother language, but is Moroccan Darija really possible to understand for speakers of Classical Arabic? I say no... We have got a very rich culture and only our language can really define our emotions and our culture... The history of Morocco is by far the oldest of North Africa and we cannot limit it to the Arabic invasion of the VIIIth century... Moroccans can't speak Classical Arabic because it's a different language! Darija is the only language that is spoken by the vast majority of Moroccans, it's my mother tongue and as the vast majority of Moroccans, I can't understand Classical Arabic or speak it properly... A minority does, but even our ministers can't speak it correctly! Have anybody heard them speaking it?... That's a mix between Darija, French and Arabic most of the time : ridiculous... Why? Because we persist denying our own language! Just think of it : what is the real language of Moroccans and why can't we speak Arabic if Darija is just a dialect of it?...

hello everyone, let me start by saying that i'm so happy to have found this website, i find the contributions so enlightening and interesting personnaly i found them of use in my personal life, well fisrt i'd like to present my idea which consist of this, i believe that Drija is only a dialect of the classicla arbic and i don't see it as a full fledged language not because of the missing grammar system or written system but only because i believe that classical arabic is the umbrella whi holds all the dialects whether they are intelligible or not from moroccan, tunisian, egyptian, lebanese...etc
the fact that moroccans do not speak classical arabic is due to the habit, if people were born in classical arbic speakeing society they would have, this needs an invistigation on how did Darija emerge and what is sustaining it so far?

It's hard to say that darija is a language. It's just Arabic "light" with some input from local amazigh dialects and foreign languages.

Sure it's widely understood and used, but it's no possible to make it as an official language because it lacks the structure (grammar), literature (history) and the deepness to communicate abstract ideas (academia).

But as you have mentioned, darija can be used in many areas such as entertainment (TV, Audio, ..). Arabic on the other hand is a strong and international language, and easily understood by illiterates ( my grandma understands the TV Journals)

The usage of Darija is mostly raised by Moroccan francophones who just don't want to see French replaced by the official language of the country, Arabic.

These elite of francophones have expended the use of French in education, business and government even though the majority of Moroccan can't communicate in French. However, unlike the successes of French in some African countries where it's eliminated local languages, Arabic seems too difficult to beat. And eventually, the national language will take its place.
